Norway elected to UN Human Rights Council

“I am pleased that Norway has now been elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Council. Our work now begins in earnest. During the next three years we will participate actively in the Council. We will take our share of responsibility and work systematically to promote human rights,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

High-level policy makers will share their policies and strategies and explore with others concrete experiences, priorities and initiatives as part of a comprehensive global approach for delivering climate solutions.

Gore calls melting ice a global wake-up call

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Al Gore, ministers from Europe, the Americas and Asia, and some of the world’s leading experts on snow and ice melting met in Tromsø, Norway, today. Mr Gore and Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who cochaired the conference, decided to establish a task force which will report on these issues to the climate conference in Copenhagen in December 2009.

2nd Anatolian Ski Marathon to take place on March 8th

This coming Sunday the second Anatolian Ski Marathon will take place in the Bolu/Aladag region, building on the succes of the event last year. It is an opportunity for enthuasists of cross country skiing to come together and share the joy of this wonderful sport.

- I decided to attend this conference to convey Norway’s views. We who have made a point of defending freedom of expression cannot opt for non-attendance as a strategy, leaving the floor to precisely those who hold opposite views. We will not surrender the floor of the United Nations to the extremists, said Støre in his statement.

Jagland Norwegian candidate for Council of Europe Secretary General

On September 24th Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre informed the chair of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers that Member of the Storting (the Norwegian Parliament) Thorbjørn Jagland is Norway’s candidate for the position of Secretary General in the Council of Europe.
