Jaga Jazzist to Turkey

Last updated: 13/01/2012 // Norwegian progressive jazz ensemble Jaga Jazzist, a phenomenon with their unique sound and 9 piece orchestra, will perform in Istanbul for the first time, as a part of the Garanti Jazz Green concerts series on Saturday, January 21st. Get ready for a jazz concert that you’ve never seen before!

Jaga Jazzist has been sweeping fans with their own unique sound that blends jazz, rock and electronica as well as their extraordinary identities. Jaga will be at Tamirane to rock the audience with their rhythmic, melodic and hypnotic music.

The main reason for Jaga Jazzist’s unique style and non-categorized music is that the talented musicians that compose this “jazz army” also take part in many different projects other than Jaga Jazzist. Jaga members have contributed to nearly every significant musical recording in Norway and neighbouring Scandinavian countries and are extraordinary and talented musicians that get inspiration from different kinds of music. Ages of Jaga members range between 29 and 35, yet their musical career which has witnessed numerous performances at international jazz, rock and electronic festivals goes back 17 years; indeed an indicator of their talent.

Best jazz album according to BBC

Formed in 1994, Jaga received massive critical acclaim with their first album “A Livingroom Hush” (2001), out from Scandinavian Warner. The album was named 2002’s best jazz album by BBC. With several concerts that took place in the following years, Jaga Jazzist enchanted music lovers and caught the attention of Ninja Tune; one the leading record labels for independent and alternative music. Jaga released the second album “The Stix” from Ninja Tune.

Jaga Jazzist has been compared to many; such as Eric Satie, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Aphex Twin, Stereolab, Soft Machine, Squarepusher, Isotope 217 and Tortoise. The band themselves cite Steve Reich, My Bloody Valentine, Fela Kuti, Dungen, Jean Claude Vannier, Tortoise, Cornelius, Sonic Youth, Radiohead and MGMT as their most important influences.

9 piece orchestra

Jaga Jazzist will be at Tamirane on Saturday, January 21st with their 9 piece orchestra;
Mathias Eick (trumpet, contrabass, keyboard, vibraphone), Marcus Forsgren (guitar), Even Ormestad (bass), Andreas Mjøs (vibraphone, guitar), Lars Horntveth (saxophone, clarinet, guitar), Martin Horntveth (drums), Øystein Moen(keyboard), Erik Johannessen (trombone, percussion) and Peder Simonsen (tuba, glockenspiel).
