Norwegian trolls to Istanbul

13/04/2010 // These days you can see Henrik Ibsen’s famous “Peer Gynt” sung and acted out in Istanbul.

- We were very pleased to see that there was not a single seat empty in the concert hall on the premiere, says Yaprak Sandalci, the leader of the project.

She refers to the opening night of the performance “Who am I? Peer Gynt” on 28th of February, in Istanbul’s concert hall Is Sanat.

Children on stage

The singers and actors on stage are the children from the music group Koro Porte. The group have done quite similar projects before, but never working with a play written by a Norwegian.

- We chose “Peer Gynt” because it is a well known piece of music and because the genre of program music suits perfectly a performance directed at children, says Sandalci.

Targeting three year olds

Sandalci herself has written the lyrics, based on the text of Ibsen. The music is the original “Peer Gynt”-music composed by the Norwegian Edvard Grieg.

- Adding lyrics to the music, in my opinion makes it easier to communicate the story to small children. I think parents should take their children to the concert hall even if they are at the age of three, Sandalci says.

Different from Koro Porte’s previous performances, is also that this time the parents of the children participate on stage as well.

“Who am I? Peer Gynt” will be played three times this spring: 21st of March, 25th of April and the 16th of May.
