Stories About Treasures and Trees

Last updated: 19/10/2011 // Thursday 20th of October it was possible to both explore Norwegian contemporary art and listen to Norwegian jazz in Istanbul. The exhibition “Contemporary Norwegian Craft” was opened by Ambassador Janis Bjørn Kanavin at Galleri Bir-Nokta. Later the same evening the jazz trio “Telling Stories About Trees” performed at Borusan Center of Culture and Arts.

“Contemporary Norwegian Craft” presents the works of 15 Norwegian artists from three specific regions in eastern Norway, and in addition three artists are specially invited. The exhibition can be seen at Galleri Bir-Nokta in the Beyoğlu district until 20th of November.

When the Rock Begins to Roll

In “Contemporary Norwegian Craft”, with its great variety of art forms, you find everything from glassmaking, ceramics, and sculptures to textiles. Evident in the different works is a growing interest in exploring the story-telling capability of crafts.
-I collect scrap, or what we can call readymades. To hunt for treasures are a main part of my work. Wherever I go I collect objects, one of the artists, Putte H. Dal, explains about his work “CASUS / SPY”. Some of the works can also be interpreted in a political way, like Margrethe Loe Elde’s works:

-A line trough all my work is an attitude against the consumer society. It is important to me that my work-process reflects this view. I therefore consistently make use of recycled materials, she says. A special feature of the exhibition is the text by the Norwegian poet Gro Dahle. The honest and beautiful text “When the rock begins to roll” explains the process towards an exhibition.
