Last updated: 03/06/2010 // The Norwegian Foreign Minister condemns Israel’s use of military force against civilians on the humanitarian convoy heading for Gaza.

- Norway is shocked that Israeli naval forces have shot and killed civilians while boarding the convoy carrying humanitarian supplies to Gaza. I condemn this use of military force against civilians, says Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, in a press release.

In order to outline what happened when the convoy was boarded on Sunday 30th of May, Norway gives its support to the impartial and transparent investigation, demanded by the UN Security Council.

- What is permitted in situations like this one is clearly defined in international law. These rules cannot be set aside for political or military purposes, says Gahr Støre.

Asks Israel to end the blockade

At the same time, the Norwegian Foreign Minister reminds that Norway already has voiced a clear stand on the blockade issue.

- Norway has repeatedly called for an end to the blockade of Gaza, so that humanitarian aid and other necessary assistance can reach the Palestinian population, says Gahr Støre.

The Norwegian Foreign Minister says that putting an end to the blockade is crucial, especially considering the importance of reconstructing Gaza after the war.

Norwegian activists back in Norway

Three Norwegian citizens were onboard the convoy’s largest vessel “Mavi Marmara”. Like most of the other activists from this ship, they were first detained in Israel. However, with the help from Turkish authorities the three Norwegians are now brought safely back to Norway.

- We appreciate the generous assistance given by the Turkish authorities. We thank them for bringing the three Norwegians first to Istanbul, and then arranging further transport to Oslo with Turkish Airlines, says Norway’s Ambassador to Turkey, Cecilie Landsverk.
