In April 2008 Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu's predecessor H.E. Mr. Ali Babacan and Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, signed a treaty for the reinforcement of bilateral relations between the two countries. Some of the agreements included in the treaty were working to strengthen democracy, maintaining political dialogue and joint work on economic, energy and climate issues. The treaty can be found here.
For Norwegian tourists Turkey is one of the most popular destinations, and in 2009 as many as 263.000 Norwegians visited Turkey. There has also been a growth in the number of Turkish tourists coming to Norway. For these, taking cruises to see the beautiful fjords is a popular attraction.
In the southern Turkey there is a vibrant Norwegian community. On this year's Norwegian National Day , on 17th of May, more than thousand Norwegians paraded the streets of Alanya. In Norway there are about 15.000 people of Turkish origin. Most of them have settled in the capital Oslo and the nearby city Drammen.
Exchange of students between the two countries is seen as important.
The Turkish-Norwegian Friendship Association has as the main objective to improve relations between Turks and Norwegians. A short history about the Association, as well as contact info for one of its founders can be found here.
Norwegian companies that operate in Turkey include StatoilHydro, Statkraft, Jotun, BarWil, Borregaard, Det Norske Veritas, Euro-Center, Fjord Martin and North Cape Minerals. Over the last years, there has been a growth in trade between the two countries. In 2009 Norway exported goods worth 4,277 billion Norwegian Kroner (NOK) to Turkey. In the same year Norway imported goods worth 3,333 billion NOK. 1 NOK equals approximately 0,23 TL.
